Kumeu is Auckland’s oldest wine growing region. Many people like to visit the award-winning boutique wineries here. Some like enjoying their wine tastings and great food overlooking the vines. Others just like to sip on craft beers at the microbrewery.
The bustling cosmopolitan center of Manukau is located in the South Auckland. It is home to the largest Polynesian community in the world. The vast black-sand beaches, rolling countryside, volcanic cones, and the majestic Awhitu Peninsula are all within easy reach. At beautiful Manukau, the original aboriginal people of the area introduced me to their traditional lifestyle. I walked with them through their ancestral lands and learned their ancient ways.
Auckland is blessed with natural beauty, from the gardens in the city to the lush landscapes of its 26 regional parks. Whether visitors are trekking through dense native rainforest or looking for a grassy picnic spot with sea views, the scenery ranges from peaceful and picturesque to downright spectacular.
It was a rare experience for me to walk among the 10,000 native and exotic plants at the Auckland Botanic Gardens and saw the unique sculptures dotted throughout the colorful gardens. I experienced the serenity of New Zealand’s natural world. It is a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Chinese immigration to New Zealand dates back to the early 1850s, and since then Chinese communities have grown and intertwined with the people of New Zealand. The old Chinatown was once based in the Auckland Central. Early shops included Chinese laundry shops, restaurants, and food retailers.
Auckland’s west coast is famous for its spectacular scenery, native wildlife, rainforest-clad ranges, and rugged black-sand beaches. The area is one big playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with surfing, swimming, jogging, hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, and canoeing all at our fingertips. I took in the region’s cultural attractions with a visit to some of the local art galleries or the bustling market.
The east side of Auckland is where the countryside meets the coast. Seaside villages cluster round sandy bays and coves, while further inland vineyards, rolling green hills, and farmers’ markets make a picturesque tapestry. The City Farmers’ Market in Britomart sell handmade breads, olive oils, appetizing meats, pastries, chocolates, condiments, cheeses, and more.
The common denominator for my travels is a focus on interior situations, moments when my spirit remains quiet and still to the noise and activities of nature and everyday life. For me, traveling can reflect the celebration of the simple and good things in life. It would be worth the travel time if all travels could inspire and evoke emotions. This is most important to me.
