When I told my friends that I was planning to visit New Zealand, some of them who had been to New Zealand recommended traveling by train in order to see more of the best of the country. They were right. I was able to sit back in comfort, and watch the scenery glide past through enormous panoramic windows. There is a spectacular range of scenery, from untouched alpine landscapes, rolling hills, winding rivers, towering mountains, to rugged coastlines. It was easy to hop from one adventure to the next.
People in New Zealand are proud of their creativity and they call it the Kiwi ingenuity.
The south’s rich mix of Maori and Pacific Island cultures is mirrored in the exciting art, music, and cultural festivals in the region. Traces of former Maori settlements still remain after 800 years. New Zealand Maori called this land Tamaki Makaurau, a maiden desired by a hundred lovers. It was a place fought over for its vast riches, including its forested hills, productive volcanic soils and harbors full of seafood.
The most popular walk on Rangitoto Island is directly to the summit with breathtaking 360-degree views from the top. It took me about one hour each way. On my way downhill was a relaxing walk and it gave me a taste of the beauty of the waterfalls, streams, and native bush. This beautiful scenery offered me a picturesque backdrop for the country’s fascinating history and its Kiwi ingenuity.
It was an incredible experience to discover New Zealand’s kiwi bird. New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi is highly protected. It is the only bird known to have nostrils of the end of its bill and it also has one of the largest egg-to-body weight ratios of any bird, with the egg averaging about 15 percent of the body weight. Kiwis live in pairs and mate for life, sometimes as long as 30 years. Kiwi birds are New Zealand’s amazing natural treasures. Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city.
“Kiwi” is the nickname used internationally for people from New Zealand. The name derives from the kiwi, a flightless bird. It is not only native to New Zealand; it is also the national symbol of New Zealand.
Kiwifruit is often shortened to Kiwi. It is oval, about the size of a large hen’s egg. It has a fuzzy, dull greenish-brown skin and bright green flesh with rows of tiny, black, edible seeds. There is also another kind of kiwifruit that has smooth brown skin with golden flesh. It has a soft texture and a sweet but tangy flavor. It is a commercial crop in New Zealand.
I consider the day I visited New Zealand one of my luckiest day of my life. I don’t need many trips, just the most interesting. The secret is to find it among the other destinations. There are not great places without great explorers, because while one is the creativity, the other is its revelation. They can exist only in recognizing each other and living with each other.
