Sensational Edinburgh, Scotland

Wendy Yeh

Edinburgh Castle and Calton Hill offer impressive views of the city of Edinburgh and where I found monuments and the observatory that looks like a Greek temple.
My trip to Edinburgh was full of surprises. I discovered Edinburgh’s hidden history on an underground guided tour around the real Mary King’s Close. It is a popular visitor attraction.
Mary King’s Close was once one of the busiest, liveliest streets in 17th century Edinburgh. It is amazing how such an important thoroughfare ended up blocked off from the world for nearly 400 years. I was curious about the truth behind the myths and the legends surrounding Mary King’s Close and its residents.
I took time to walk through a unique collection of hidden valleys and explored those deserted rooms sealed off since the 18th century when the Old Town area was being redeveloped. I used my own imagination to see how the 17th century streets were frozen in time and to think what daily life was like, for both rich and poor. The true story of how a network of Old Town streets found it buried forever beneath Edinburgh’s Royal Mile was incredible. During the tour, I experienced the most sensational of Scotland while being surrounded in history.
The Edinburgh Dungeon is located near the Waverly Train Station, which promised all history’s horrible tales. Comparing to the Dungeon, the Edinburgh Zoo was a much gentler place. Our tour guide took us on an emotional journey, engrossing us in a story to rival any opera plot with dramatic twists and turns.
I saw, heard, smelled, and felt Edinburgh’s stories come to life before my eyes as frighteningly funny characters transported me through time. Some people referred to the journey through the Edinburgh Dungeon as an edgy entertainment. Since I had no choice but to take whatever came my way, I was subjected to surprise after surprise. The experience was as pungent and memorable as a sharp spice.
I discovered that major train stations are usually right in the center of the city, with sandwich shops, vendors of fresh fruits and vegetables, restaurants inside the train stations.
After the Mary King’s Close tour, I could still witness all things Mary King’s in the gift shop. They captured my imagination. It was not just curiosity that drew the people to them. It was their story. I found some high quality authentic Scottish gifts. But I was shocked to see the plaque and pestilence souvenirs on display. It was even more shocking to see some tourists purchasing them.
I have been dreaming of visiting Edinburgh, Scotland, for a long time. I felt fortunate to have the opportunity to make the trip. It was not its ancient architecture that initially caught my attention. It was not the modern buildings. It was this miracle of the harmonious mixture of the old and the new made Edinburgh a sensational town to visit.
